A high salt intake leads to a higher body weight, and more fat around the middle… and it’s not the case that higher weight people prefer salty foods. The sodium is the culprit.
High sodium intake is associated with increased visceral fat around the midsection, which a very unhealthy and unattractive place to store fat. This increases the waist circumference and waist to hip ratio (WTH), leading to a less than ideal feminine figure. Waist to hip ratio is an important factor in the way humans judge attractiveness.
Sodium seems to modulate the reproductive axis and may be a factor in pubertal development.
High sodium is also harmful to the heart. It raises blood pressure and may cause an abnormal heart rhythm. It also harms the kidneys, compounds obesity, and may complicate Type 2 diabetes. It also negatively impacts our skin, brains, bones, and increases inflammation.
Some individuals may be more salt sensitive than others.
